One community-based study followed a multiethnic cohort of elderly participants over 4.5 years (Szkup et al., 2018). Researchers measured several inflammatory biomarkers, including C-reactive protein (CRP), IL-6, ACT, and GDF15. These measurements helped researchers track changes in cardiovascular risk over time.
Metabolic Syndrome and Cardiovascular Disease Risk

Age emerged as a negative factor in the pathway from metabolic syndrome to flow-mediated dilation. This finding supports early health promotion for younger age groups. Cardiovascular risk remained a recurring theme throughout the study. Combining diet, exercise, and behavioural counselling lowered risk more effectively than diet changes alone (Lin et al., 2021).
Metabolic Syndrome and Colorectal Cancer Risk
Researchers have also examined how metabolic syndrome relates to colorectal cancer risk (Uzunlulu et al., 2016). One multicentre case-control study assessed 140 histologically confirmed colorectal cancer cases. Results showed that high waist circumference combined with elevated fasting blood glucose raised colorectal cancer risk by 126%.
This study was relatively small, yet the risk magnitude matched that of a family history of colonic adenomas. Larger prospective studies are still needed to confirm the link between metabolic syndrome and colorectal cancer.
Researchers used the simplest of three available metabolic syndrome definitions in their analysis. A Cox proportional hazards regression model estimated the association between each syndrome component and colorectal cancer risk.
Adiponectin, a hormone with anti-inflammatory properties, may also play a protective role. This compound appears to improve insulin sensitivity in the body. Obesity, by contrast, promotes inflammatory signals that may contribute to cancer development (Uzunlulu et al., 2016).
